Sparks Gallery Unveils Local Artist’s New Painted Plexiglass & Canvas Works For Solo Show
Kathleen Kane-Murrell’s art conveys how “chasing shadows” can balance us in a world moving at a rapid pace.
Kathleen Kane-Murrell’s work is a testament to the beauty of curiosity—an exploration of the often-overlooked elements of our world.
An accomplished artist and beloved educator, Kane-Murrell’s art invites viewers to slow down, observe, and engage with the interplay of light and shadow in unexpected ways.
Her latest body of work is rooted in a childhood memory: a theater production of Peter Pan, where she first became aware of shadows as something more than just an absence of light. “The fanciful idea that Peter’s shadow could be lost and then recovered stayed with me,” she recalls. “As an adult, I now understand J.M. Barrie’s deeper meanings, but for me, the story sparked an awareness of something often overlooked.”
In her art, Kane-Murrell embraces the transient nature of shadows, incorporating suspended plexiglass to create layers of vision that shift with changing light. This discovery transformed her artistic process, reinforcing her attraction to discarded and unnoticed materials—shadows being the ultimate overlooked form. “Shadows are ephemeral—brief, fleeting, evanescent,” she explains. “Contemporary society demands us to look quickly and make hasty judgments. Seeing shadows requires slow looking.”
Through her work, Kane-Murrell encourages viewers to reconsider their perceptions of time, preservation, and transformation. Her immersive pieces create meditative spaces that invite more than a fleeting glance—they call for reflection and discovery. With a career dedicated to both creating and teaching, Kane-Murrell continues to inspire audiences with her unique approach to artmaking. Her passion for exploring life’s subtle intricacies makes her work not just visually compelling, but deeply thought-provoking.
